Frenchman Bay

View of Frenchman Bay from the top of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park. Bar Harbor is down below on the near shoreline and those are the Porcupine Islands in the Bay. Rain clouds and wind moving through the coast of Maine that day.

Gentianopsis crinita, Union County, Georgia 1

Today I share with you a look at a photographer that inspires me with his images. I started following Alan Cressler’s Flickr Photostream long ago. Alan specializes in images of rare and unusual subjects. His job as a U.S. Geological Survey technician allows him to be in the field and travel extensively.

Alan is based out of Decatur, Georgia and a large percentage of his photos are of the flora and fauna of the Southeastern United States. A part of my life was spent in the region where Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama intersect. It is an area which has a great diversity in habitat and lots of rare species of life living there. As such I am particularly fascinated with Alan’s images from that area. It inspires me to not only take photographs but to cherish and enjoy the magic of the natural world.

Alan shoots most of his images with a Canon Digital Rebel XSi (amazon affiliate link) (a camera I use as well) and a Canon Powershot G10 (amazon affiliate link). His favorite lens to use with the XSi is the Canon 10-22mm (amazon affiliate link) wide angle. According to Alan he normal uses a small Gitzo carbon fiber tripod with a small Slik ballhead. Using the tripod allows him shoot at low ISO settings and use small apertures. In addition Alan eliminates contrast and shadows by using supplemental light via off-camera flash.

When Alan has the time, he often gives fascinating accounts of how the photo was taken (often after reaching a remote location via rugged terrain or water) and then gives a background on how unusual or rare the subject of the photo is. I find this educational and motivational. Thus my desire to bring Alan Cressler to your attention. His work is both beautiful and important and fortunately he shares his discoveries with us on Flickr.

All of the images in this post are from Alan Cressler and I encourage you to click on them and enjoy his work in full resolution. All rights are reserved on his photos.

Serene Water

From the trail around Lake Needwood in Rock Creek Regional Park, Montgomery County, MD. I often use this as a desktop background, so I thought I would share it with you. I think I am drawn to the silvers in the scene.

Shaker Lakes Flower

Can anyone identify this plant? My guess is that it is a Asteraceae (Daisy or Aster). Pretty cool pattern in the center.
